First named the Boozerhounds (it’s almost a pun), my fantasy team changed to the more eponymously appropriate Baronhounds after a mid-season trade brought the high-performance, (usually) highly-injured Warriors guard over.
But after this exciting-ish-sort-of, when-you-think-about-it trade, it’s time for another name change:
The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded No. 3 pick O.J. Mayo to the Memphis Grizzlies for Kevin Love in an eight-player, late-night blockbuster long after the NBA draft concluded.
Yes, the Mayohounds will be dominating next season. It’s either that or the Gayhounds, but sporting that on Yahoo is like wearing an ‘I Like Imus’ shirt to a Nation Of Islam meeting.
In actual basketball news, Memphis will still lose at least 50 games next year, but they’ll be ridiculously fun to watch. Expect a lot of points on the offensive end… and a few more points given up on the other end.
For fantasy freaks, Mayo looks like a healthy mid-draft pick-up. Like last year’s number three, Al Horford, Mayo comes in fairly NBA ready, and he’ll command a good amount of court time. At 20, and a slightly over-hyped veteran of the spotlight, he won’t be blinded by the big lights in the NBA.
OJ’s numbers will be like early-season Kevin Durant; perhaps two or three less minutes, 15-17 points on 40 percent shooting, one three and a steal, and three or four boards.
He won’t be forced to spend much time at the point, with Mike Conley likely to deliver a strong sophomore year. Conley will be a healthy late round pick (before Tayshaun Prince, but after Rajon Rondo).
